Decarbonize Like the Parks

Tools for transitioning off fossil fuel in your home or businesses

Lake Superior’s five national parks are reducing carbon emissions and improving sustainability through changes to park buildings, operations, and transportation. Some of the parks are in remote natural settings and face extreme weather, but with help from the National Parks of Lake Superior Foundation (NPLSF) they are making exciting progress using off-the-shelf products that are accessible to everyone.

If the parks can do it, you can too! There are many how-to resources and financial incentives that can help you decarbonize at home.

Solar-Powered Home

Find information on federal incentives to decarbonize through home improvements, including weatherization, solar installations, electric panel upgrades, and more, as well as appliances such as induction cooktops, air source and geothermal heat pumps, and other strategies.

Switching to solar energy is a powerful way to decarbonize at home. With our Solar Panel Savings Estimator, you can quickly estimate how much energy solar panels could produce based on your location, using real data from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). The tool also estimates how much you could save annually on energy costs, the CO2 emissions you could avoid, and provides an idea of the roof space required.

What's next? Contact a local solar installer for a personalized evaluation. You'll be well on your way to reducing both your electricity bills and your carbon footprint!

*Disclaimer: This tool provides a general estimate of cost and CO2 savings. Actual results may vary based on factors such as the specific solar panels used, your roof’s condition, height, angle, material plus shading and whether battery storage is included. The estimate is based on average sunlight at your location and the number of panels installed. CO2 savings also will vary by location. You may also wish to cross-reference this estimate with tools like Google’s Project Sunroof. For more accurate estimates, consult a local solar installer.

Many states offer incentives for homes and businesses. On this site you can plug in your zip code for a comprehensive list of financial incentives, grant programs, and more, tailored to your area.
