The Apostle Islands – 21 Islands in 21 Days

Today a group of five kayakers will embark on a trip to explore the Apostle Islands archipelago. The kayakers include National Geographic Photographer and friend of the National Parks of Lake Superior Foundation, David Guttenfelder, and NPLSF Board Member/Lake Superior Podcast Host, Frida Waara. This trip will be the springboard for a National Geographic feature story about the Apostle Islands' people, history, and grandeur.

Twenty-one days is the planned length of the trip, but as anyone who has ever paddled a sea kayak on 'The Big Blue,' as Frida likes to call Lake Superior, knows the lake is boss. So conditions will dictate the pace of the trip.

National Geographic became interested in doing an in-depth article about the Apostles because of David's photographs of his trips there in the fall and winter of 2020. Look for the piece to come out late this year or early in 2022.

The NPLSF, Friends of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, and Wilderness Inquiry will be supporting this trip in significant ways.
